In BRUDERLAND IST ABGEBRANNT, Angelika Nguyen used a video camera to document the living conditions of Vietnamese contract workers in 1992 whose original government agreements had become invalid following German reunification. Observations at Berlin Airport prior to their forced return to Vietnam and accounts of everyday racism coalesce into a bitter historical document about the collapse of socialist promises of solidarity. In March 1990, between the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification, Harry Rag travels through East Germany, which at that moment still just about existed. Fleeting encounters, incisive observations and experimental music come together to form a music-video-like collage: an exploration of the theme from a West German perspective that looks and listens closely while allowing for breaks, gaps and questions. The film’s title thus refers both to its open form and to a country in transition that has lost its previous designation but has yet to find a new one. (fh)
